THE GIRL BEHIND ALL THE CANDYART
Caramelaw A.K.A Sheena Aw, is a mad motion graphic designer/video editor by day and a candyland superhero by night. She was raised in sunny Singapore and majored in animation back in college, after then ventured into broadcast when she started working.
She’s an adventurer, a dreamer and a monster creator. After a hard day’s work in the office during the day, Caramelaw retreats into her studio for a bit of action, making candyart, customizing vinyl toys and dolls.
Making candy art wasn’t what she thought she would do way in the beginning when she was still a young-ling. She did a lot of random stuff, manga and comics but never felt connected with it. Therefore Caramelaw began exploring other areas of illustration and stumbled upon Takashi Murakami’s work. Which woke her little heart up. She felt so inspired she started work on it right away. “My World of Madness” (Illustration below) was the 1st piece of artwork that set of the Caramelaw style. Everything else that followed was history.
Cute + Morbid, that sums up her work perfectly.
Her creative progress usually starts with a handy sketch book. She goes on her adventures, gets inspired and scribble ideas down into her little book of treasures. Honestly, she has no idea how any illustration she works on will turn out to be. They simply, take on a a life of their own, pretty much instinctively. Its fascinating because she will never know what to expect at the end but the results, is always satisfying.
Nature, colours, rainbows, monsters and everything that’s weird or strange. The stranger her creation gets, the happier she is. Caramelaw draws inspiration from all time art-heros, Simone Legno of Tokidoki, Takashi Murakami, Tado, Friends With You and many more.
She’s also a big nature lover. Be it trees, animals, flowers, mushrooms, rainbows, raindrops…anything! It plays a big part in her art creations. Caramelaw loves how beautiful and perfect mother nature is. She thinks the world should learn from its beauty and not take anything on earth for granted. She tends to reflect that in most of her artwork.
Caramelaw has done design work for DC Comics, Atomic Snowboard, Hasbro and many others. Won a Silver PROMAX Award back in 2005 for one of her on-air promos for MTV Asia. That made her a very happy girl.
“I think it’s very important for an artist to be able to connect with people through their art. Whenever I create art, I hope it brings a smile to those who look at it. I get people coming up to me telling me they feel very happy when they look at my art and that is the best gift of all. The colors, the characters and the love that is put into it. I’m glad people are able to feel that.”
Besides the sickening world of broadcast, she finds herself emerged in her little world of candies, rainbows and mushrooms. Her vector world which she can never stop creating and hopefully, bringing joy to those who enjoys her art and custom toys.
